Many companies have joined the clean beauty movement, but few use ingredients that are 100% traceable. Japanese-based clean beauty brand DAMDAM is the exception — the company is transparent in sourcing all of the ingredients used to make its line of skincare products and has taken on the mission of supporting regenerative farming to help make this happen. Whereas conventional farming methods often strip the soil of minerals and pollute the environment with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, regenerative farming restores soil health and is sustainable for future generations.
DAMDAM has partnered with regenerative farmers in Japan to source the ingredients for its products — a partnership that takes clean beauty to a much deeper level by proactively working to improve environmental conditions for the future versus simply using clean ingredients in the present. DAMDAM’s founders Giselle Go and Philippe Terrien shared, “As a brand, it is important for us to support farmers who stay on and maintain stewardship of their ancestral land. It is a circular relationship: we source our hero ingredients from them, allowing them to continue regenerative farming practices (crops from this practice are typically excluded from food distribution). Through their pesticide-free practice, they rehabilitate the soil, encourage biodiversity within crop species, and replenish the soil using residue from distillation for our formulation as natural compost. It is an exchange that benefits all of us.”
By cultivating small harvests of plants like Shiso, or Japanese mint, DAMDAM is helping farmers increase crop diversity, which also benefits the land. The production process is circular with the byproducts of harvesting and processing returned to the soil through composting for a truly sustainable model. As Giselle and Phillipe added, “For us at DAMDAM, what sets us apart is our personal relationship with (a new generation of young) farmers in the northern region of Japan. They grow Japanese rice and Shiso, two of our hero ingredients, using regenerative practices. Together, we benefit as a brand and as a community from our intersecting relationships with the land and each other. Farmers can make an independent living from their crops, maintain stewardship of their ancestral land, remove the danger of working with toxic agricultural chemicals, and most importantly, help the land heal.”
While the focus on regenerative farming is in itself noteworthy, DAMDAM’s commitment to sustainability and quality reaches into every aspect of the company’s production. Only natural ingredients are used in its products and the rich traditions of Japanese skincare are honored in the local production process — from the farmers to the craftspeople. Japan has a long history of crafting skincare products that goes back hundreds of years and DAMDAM is committed to honoring these traditions in its product line by using time-tested natural ingredients and celebrating the rituals of skincare. Here are a few of DAMDAM’s most notable products — many of which are conveniently available at Sephora.
